• The majority of the business’ ownership is private, not publicly traded
• The business is registered only in its home state, and has no affiliation with an out of state headquarters or corporate office. *In the case of a Keep Saint Petersburg Local member, it means it is a business in the City of St. Petersburg, Florida, with no corporate headquarters outside Pinellas County*
• The business relies solely on its unique name and reputation (i.e, it does not “wear” a regionally or nationally recognized brand name)
• The business makes independent decisions regarding its name signage, brand, appearance, purchasing, practices, hiring, distribution, etc.
• The business is solely responsible for paying its own rent, marketing, and other business expenses - without assistance from a corporate headquarters
Here’s what an independent business is NOT:
• A franchise
• An “independent distributor” - just because independent may form part of their title, a representative/distributor/ambassador of a multi-level-marketing/network marketing/direct sales company (some examples: Arbonne, doTerra, LuLaRoe, Mary Kay, Origami Owl, Rodan + Fields, Scentsy, Stella & Dot) is NOT an independent business - they are a representative/distributor/ambassador of a national/international company that has its corporate headquarters outside our area
Our Independent Business Alliance ONLY has locally-owned, independent businesses as members. We do NOT have franchises nor independent distributors represented in our membership/at our events. We’re not saying you shouldn’t support these businesses; we ask that you Think *Independent* First and want to clarify what an independent business truly is! Franchises and nationally-based companies have an advantage over indies (purchasing power, brand recognition/marketing, etc.).
We’re working on behalf of independent businesses because 1) they can only rely on themselves/they don’t get help from a corporate headquarters and 2) their uniqueness contributes to the awesomeness of our city.
Thanks for reading. We felt it important for you to know who we represent. #KeepStPeteLocal #KSPL]]>

We’ve teamed up with KSPL member, St. Pete Threads, whose mission is to curate and create St. Petersburg branded merchandise that showcases our awesome artists, businesses, groups & non-profits. They support our community by sending 50% of their profits back to the people and organizations that help make St. Pete great.]]>
You may have noticed the heart hovering over the “i” in our Localtopia logo and wondered why it was there. Since its inception Keep Saint Petersburg Local (KSPL) has promoted the idea of *local love* - showing that you love St. Pete by your support of our local businesses and community organizations.
Localtopia takes place a week before Valentine’s Day and is one of the best opportunities for you to show that *local love* and not just by your support of the vendors/participants. There will be a variety of engaging activities that will allow you (and your children) to express your love for our city and its residents.
This event is KSPL’s greatest “love note” to St. Pete. You’ll be given the opportunity to contribute your very own “love letter” to St. Pete via the “PASSAGES” creative installation that premiered at First Night. The installation is presented by Keep St. Pete Lit, the NOMADstudio Art Bus and the Bluebird Books Bus and you’ll find it in the Arts Village.
NOMADstudio also invites you to add to their mobile mural by painting a visual symbol of your love for St. Pete on the side of their Art Bus. In addition, they’ll be addressing the growing problem of intolerance by highlighting the importance of UNITY within our community and will be teaching Localtopians how to fold origami hearts as a symbol that “hate cannot drive out hate, only LOVE can do that”
Love books? Then head over to the Bluebird Books Bus! They’ll be offering FREE books all day and you are also welcome to bring books to donate & share with others!
Many non-profits will have booths at Localtopia – advocacy, animal welfare, arts & culture, economic development, health & human services and LGBT organizations will be represented. We believe that you should “give where you live.” It’s as important to support our local non-profits with your donations and volunteer time as it is to support our local businesses with your spending.
We’re asking the community to bring non-perishable items to donate to both Hannah’s Homeless and The Kind Mouse Productions. They both help feed hungry children in our community. You’ll find more information about The Kind Mouse’s “Mouse Nibbles” program HERE
In the Family Village area there are a couple of activities that allow for our children to show their *local love* too! makeme studio will be creating heart necklaces and handmade Valentines for patients at All Children’s Hospital and other local hospitals. Wonderland Floral Art and Gift Loft will also be creating Valentine floral projects with the kids like they did last year.
We’re incredibly pleased to showcase a mini Heart Gallery of Pinellas & Pasco exhibit. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if at least one of their foster children was adopted by a Localtopian who was so overcome with *local love* that they offered a child a forever home?
Last, but we hope not least, is the way you can show your love for Keep Saint Petersburg Local. Besides being “A Community Celebration of All Things Local,” Localtopia also serves to commemorate KSPL’s anniversary. With this 2nd Localtopia, KSPL celebrates 3 Years (!) of working to build a thriving local economy and a unique community. We’ve done this with just a few unpaid volunteers and zero grants or special funding! Localtopia is a pretty massive and costly event to put on, but we want to continue to grow it and keep it as a FREE community event.
There are several ways you can show your love to KSPL! You can come to the Welcome Center and buy raffle tickets. Each vendor/participant will have a basket/prize at their booth/table. As you walk around the park you can drop the raffle ticket/s you’ve purchased in the bag/s of those whose prize/s you wish to win. This is a win-win because you’ll get to check out all of the booths/tables to see what they have! The bags look like this (paper bag with a KSPL sticker):
The other way you can help KSPL is by donating! As you enter the park you’ll find donation towers. We’d greatly appreciate you giving from the heart so that Localtopia happens every year, it remains a FREE community event and we can continue with our mission to Keep Saint Petersburg Local!
